Apparently there was a considerable rainfall in the mountains east of my hometown. The main road to Vegas is closed. I sure hope they have the debris cleared before 5 am tomorrow. The 70 mile commute will be 119 miles if I have to go the long way.

State route in the Nevada desert, so... drive flat out?
(Legal disclaimer: don't listen to me)

My Jetta TDi moves along at 80 mph +/- for about a 30 mile stretch. There isn't much more pedal so it is pretty close to flat out. There are frequent sightings of police vehicles so I have to keep it fairly reasonable and I still get 40 mpg.

Not too familiar with your exact route, but I hate the speed limits for a good portion of the Reno to Vegas trip. Flat, middle of nowhere desert, and they're honestly concerned that if my 911 hits seventy- ONE miles an hour, I will suddenly lose control and drive off road for a good quarter mile before running into the one cactus or sage brush. So stupid. :(
Respect on your MPGs at that speed.

I lived in downtown Vegas from 1994 until last December. My current job is in Henderson and I'm currently living in Pahrump. 70 miles door to door unless I have to go north which makes it the 119 miles.

Well, don't speed or you might (huge emphasis) hit a sagebrush, which is the state flower so you would feel bad.
